HISTORY

The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Sullivan County, Inc. was organized in 1977 to provide information, education and consultation to Sullivan County residents whose lives were affected by the problems of alcoholism and other drug addiction.  In response to the need for a continuum of effective treatment services, in 1985 the Council began operating the Recovery Center.  Services included a 16-bed Primary Care Unit, a 30-bed Halfway House and a Day Rehabilitation Program.

Over the years other necessary services were developed: Outpatient Clinic; Family Program; Kids Klub and Safe Summer Camp; Community Education, Prevention and Training; Gambling; and HIV/AIDS Outreach and Support.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our Mission is to work with all sectors of the community towards the prevention, intervention, and treatment of alcohol, tobacco, other drug and gambling addictions, and related issues.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Prevention is the most humane, cost-effective approach to alcohol, tobacco, other drug and gambling addictions:

- Effective prevention efforts must be comprehensive and coordinated, involving all sectors of the community;

- It is critical to foster development of community norms which value wellness and demonstrate a lack of tolerance for underage drinking, smoking, problem gambling, and for the misuse of alcohol and other drugs by anyone;

- There is a commitment to utilizing research-based strategies in working with local communities to identify and minimize risk factors and to enhance protective factors for all populations, but especially for our youth.

Alcoholism, tobacco, other drug and gambling addictions are diseases which respond well to appropriate quality care:

- Family members and significant others who care about the addicted individual are adversely affected by addictions;

- Effective treatment methods used involve loved ones and promote healing and recovery for the entire community.

 The goal is to efficiently provide the highest quality and most effective care possible:

- Each patient has the right to an individualized program of services provided by skilled and compassionate staff in a safe, caring environment;

- The aim is to maximize each individual’s potential for recovery.

The Recovery Center is committed to promoting a healthy, therapeutic environment by interacting with each other, the community, and our clients in a positive, respectful manner:

We support diversity and cultural competency in our staffing and members.

- We are committed to the on-going training and development of each staff member.

Active and ongoing involvement in a self-help program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), promotes and sustains recovery.

COMMITMENT

We are committed to providing the very best and most cost effective services in a manner which is affirming of human dignity, which addresses each individual's needs, and helps to restore individuals to themselves, their families and the community.

We are committed to working with concerned citizens to develop community norms that value wellness and demonstrate a lack of tolerance for the abuse
of alcohol, tobacco, other drug and gambling addictions.
