Working with Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Substance Abuse Clients

This training is designed to familiarize participants with gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender cultural similarities and differences and other issues that impact prevention and intervention within these communities. Participants will:
Familiarize themselves with the diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, and other sub-cultures within these populations.
Define heterosexism and homophobia and understand the impact of both at each stage of the recovery process.
Understand and describe the developmental stages of sexual orientation and identity formation, including the coming out process.
Learn about appropriate assessment and counseling techniques.
Recognize and learn more about appropriate interventions for a range of special issues facing these communities and practice some intervention skills.
Familiarize themselves with community-based resources within their regions and provide relevant referrals and follow-up care.
Identify barriers to providing more effective services to these clients within their organizations and agencies, and identify steps that they can take to empower themselves among their colleagues in the workplace.
Identifying & Treating Co-Occurring Substance Abuse & Mental Health Disorders

Addiction Counselor Ethics & Confidentiality

This 2-day training is designed to raise awareness of the importance of ethical professional practices and confidentiality to assure the health, safety, and recovery of persons suffering from addiction; to raise awareness of the importance of ethical standards for the addiction counselor as a professional and the delivery of the highest quality of service to clients. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Develop their own definition of ethics and professionalism; name and describe ethical principles.
Identify and discuss the specific issues that most frequently result in misconduct; identify and discuss transference and counter-transference issues that often cause professional misconduct; identify and describe five ways to prevent unethical behavior; and outline the avenues available to deal with unethical behavior.
Describe the unique nature of the counselor/client relationship; describe the NYS OASAS Counselor Wellness Guidelines.
How To Engage Clients Through Creative Arts

Explore the elements of creativity.
Learn what enhances creativity and what hinders it.
Learn how to promote discovery of self and others.
Learn how to run effective groups while involving each person in the group.
Overview of Relapse Prevention
Presenter: David P. Kreuter, MPS, CASAC
Participants will gain a basic understanding of historical perspectives of relapse, basic problems with reported relapse rates, and a multi-perspective view of relapse prevention. Three modes of relapse prevention will be reviewed: Daley’s Psycho Educational Model of Relapse Prevention, Marlatt & Gordon’s Cognitive Behavioral Model of Relapse Prevention, and Gorsi’s CNAPS Model of Relapse Prevention. Techniques for service delivery in each model will be offered. Participants will be introduced to basic issues related to relapse and special populations. By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Discuss basic assumptions of each model explored.
Distinguish between lapse and relapse.
Describe at least five high risk situations.
Discuss at least two factors impacting the female alcoholic and relapse.
List at least three relapse prevention strategies for the MICA client.
Describe factors leading to counselor relapse.
Parenting For Prevention:
Raising Children To Say No To Alcohol & Drugs

This training is designed to give chemical dependency professionals, parents, teachers, and other impactors of youth the knowledge and practice to apply prevention skills. The topics will include:
Foundations for teaching life skills — parents as enablers; hurting the ones we love; facts about kids’s use of AOD; a job description for parents; a job description for kids.
Teaching life skills to our children — feeling/processing skills; decision-making skills; skills for establishing positive behavior; mood maintenance skills; refusal skills.
Special issues and concerns — parental alcohol/drug use; sibling alcohol/drug use; the recovering parent and/or sibling.
Developing & Maintaining Professional Boundaries

This training is designed to give substance abuse and human service professionals a basic understanding of the importance of developing and maintaining professional boundaries when working with clients affected by substance abuse. The overall goals of this training are to:
Educate substance abuse and human service professionals and trainees about professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Enable these professionals to recognize the need for professional boundaries and confidentiality when dealing with clients affected by substance abuse.
Develop a variety of techniques and strategies to enable professionals to appropriately respond to clients and staff who violate boundaries.
Spirituality in Treatment and Recovery

This is an instructional training that will challenge participants to examine the disease of addiction as a spiritual illness. It will explore spirituality in the recovery process as a base for development of the whole person through self-knowledge and self-inventory. Participants will be able to:
Discuss the relationship between spirituality and religion.
Develop techniques and skills to help a client identify prejudices, misconceptions, and negative experiences with religion/spirituality.
Empower participant in his/her ability to discuss basic concepts of spiritual life with a client, and learn appropriate referral resources for spiritual growth.
