Learning Thursdays
Recovery Center will be offering the OASAS Learning Thursdays series. This is a series of 90 minute programs "designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals working in the addictions field". For more information on this series, please call 845-794-8080, Ext. 117.
1/26/12: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Substance Abuse: Integrated Treatment Approaches:
This presentation will describe strategies, developed by the Neurobehavioral Resource Project and International Center for the Disabled (ICD), to modify substance abuse treatment protocols to provide more effective outcomes for individuals affected by TBI and other cognitive deficits. The presenters will illustrate how these evidence-based cognitive and behavioral support techniques can be effectively integrated into OASAS programs.
2/9/12: Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT):
SBIRT is an evidence-based practice which promotes identification and early intervention services for substance use for those exhibiting signs of hazardous or harmful use but not yet exhibiting signs of diagnosable abuse or dependence. Those who exhibit signs of abuse and dependence are offered referrals to substance abuse treatment. This presentation will discuss two SAMHSA-funded projects: NYSBIRT and Project LINK. These projects target two special populations; those presenting for services in NYC Public Health STD Clinics and veterans, military personnel and their families presenting at hospital emergency departments and employee assistance programs in Jefferson County. Additional initiatives that are occurring in healthcare facilities across the state will also be addressed
2/23/12: Applying Lean Management Principles to Government and Non-Profit Agencies:
Lean is a practice that was initiated in the manufacturing industry and is akin to other process improvement practices. Lean requires intense, concentrated effort at the outset, to develop and implement a more efficient process which is then followed by an assessment to determine if the process resulted in increased efficiencies. Participants will receive a basic introduction to Lean concepts and learn how Lean is being used within OASAS. It will also highlight the use of Lean in a non-profit agency in Erie County.
3/8/12: Wellness Self Management Plus: OASAS and OMH, in collaboration with the Center for Practice Innovations at Columbia University, is pleased to announce a new curriculum based practice to provide adults experiencing mental health and substance use concerns, with the knowledge and life strategies that support recovery. This new curriculum is an adaptation of the Illness Management and Recovery evidence based practice. Participants will learn about core competencies embedded in each lesson which include motivation enhancing approaches, educational techniques and basic cognitive behavioral strategies.
3/22/12: Strategies for Maximizing Learning in Patients Who Have Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorders and Brain Injuries:
This presentation will provide an overview of principles and practices that will promote the retention of treatment information in patients with cognitive deficits. It will illustrate how these strategies can be implemented in a group format designed specifically for these patients.
4/5/12: Outcomes Management: Tool for Achieving Outstanding Program Performance:
In this presentation participants will understand how outcomes management is a central strategy for program improvement. This discussion will include how to develop metrics, use data to track progress over time, and maintain a continuous feedback loop to inform program decision making.
4/19/12: An Overview of Gender Competent Services for Women:
This will be an overview and discussion of the draft OASAS document “Practice Guidance: Gender Competent Addiction Services for Women.” In addition, participants will gain an understanding of how programs can use the document to support clinically appropriate and gender competent services for women.
5/3/12: Introduction to the OASAS online County Planning System (CPS):
This presentation will provide an overview of CPS in the context of the mental hygiene local services planning process. The presentation will cover CPS user roles, accessing and navigating the system, completing and submitting electronic planning forms, and utilizing the planning resources available in the system.
5/17/12: Transformation of Outpatient Services:
Transforming Outpatient Services (TOPS) seeks to integrate all opioid and general chemical dependency into one system of care. The vision is that patients will enter one door and have access to comprehensive treatment services including behavioral therapies, medication-assisted treatment, and critical wrap-around services. The University of Rochester Medical Center’s model will be discussed as well as the mission and preliminary steps towards moving NYS to a one outpatient system of care.
5/31/12: Clinical Supervision:
Clinical Supervision is the key to the professional development of counseling staff. This presentation will focus on the components of clinical supervision, the distinction between administrative and clinical supervision, and practical applications in busy clinical practice. This presentation will identify core elements of clinical supervision and a plan for implementation of clinical supervision including a training and development plan for clinical supervisors. A clinical supervisor from an OASAS certified program will discuss program issues in implementing and sustaining a clinical supervision plan.
6/14/12: Update on New York State Impaired Driver Services:
OASAS and DMV have been collaborating on the ACTION to RIDE initiative since 2009. This presentation will include a general overview of the impaired driver initiatives including the Impaired Driver System (IDS), the Impaired Driver Classroom (IDC) enrollment system, the new Drinking Driver Program (DDP) curriculum implementation, and the Standards for Clinical Services Provided to Individuals Arrested for an Impaired Driving Offense.
6/28/12: Behavioral Health Organizations: Mid-Year Update:
This presentation is a follow up to the introduction to Behavioral Health Organizations given in December 2011. An update and progress on the initiative will be discussed.
7/12/12: The Clinical Implications of Health Care Reform: Part II:
This presentation is a follow up to the introduction of Heath Care Reform given in December 2011. Integrated clinical practices related to Behavioral Health Organizations and Health Homes will be reviewed and discussed.
7/26/12: Overdose Prevention:
New York State faces a crisis in the misuse of prescription medications and the resulting increase in overdose deaths. This crisis can be addressed through a broad based effort to educate, control, and manage certain medications. At the same time, we must be careful to protect access to care and maintain the ability to prescribe essential medications. Through safer prescribing practices and conscientious protections, prescribers and patients can assure that effective and compassionate care remains available and that the risks associated with misuse and diversion can be reduced. This presentation will define overdose, recognition of overdose, and treatment of overdose.
8/9/12: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
This presentation will focus on the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic techniques with substance use disorders.
8/23/12: Ethics and Patient Rights:
In this presentation the guidelines that help assist with decisions related to ethical practices will be discussed. These include: ethical values, professional codes of ethics, laws related to addiction treatment, OASAS policies on professional conduct, and parameters of professional boundaries. In addition, this presentation will inform and clarify the intent of the regulation (14 NYCRR Part 815) Patient Rights, and its requirements for the purpose of enhancing services, assuring consistency, and reducing complaints regarding patient rights.
9/6/12: An Overview of Screening for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)/Domestic Violence (DV) in Substance Using and Substance Effected individuals:
This presentation will focus on the screening of persons who are entering a substance abuse prevention, treatment, or recovery program to identify whether or not they have ever been a victim/survivor and/or perpetrator of IPV/DV. It will also address what interventions are available for those identified in the screening process.
9/20/12: Family Treatment and Rehabilitation Program: An Overview:
The Family Treatment and Rehabilitation program is a cutting-edge child welfare preventive model that provides in-depth assessments and referrals, engagement, case management and support services to families who are involved with Children’s Services and are faced with substance use/disorder and/or mental health illnesses. This specialized program, which requires close systems collaboration, aims to provide comprehensive and targeted services to prevent children from entering foster care. The presentation will introduce this new innovative multi-disciplinary approach and provide attendees with concrete strategies to make it easier to work effectively across systems.
10/4/12: PARIS: An Introduction for New System Users:
This overview of PARIS is designed for individuals who have some familiarity with prevention concepts but do not have much prior training or experience with the data system. Included are aspects of the annual work plans, monthly data collection, standard reports, and related OASAS requirements. Besides basic guidance on how to get started using the system, the presentation includes some useful background on the overall system design, the underlying goals and objectives, how elements of the system are interrelated, and the variety of help resources that are available.
10/18/12: Work Readiness and Employment Retention for Recovering Veterans in Treatment:
The focus of this presentation is to support the Vocational Rehabilitation counseling and employment retention process when offering recovering Veterans resources that support work readiness and employment retention. Utilizing evidence based vocational rehabilitation counseling practices specific to the disabilities and transferable skills of the recovering veteran is imperative. Participants will learn how to access Federal, State and Local resources designed to offer the Veteran work ready support to transition into the civilian workforce. This discussion is pertinent to all treatment providers and stakeholders throughout New York State.
11/1/12: Seeking Safety: Treating Trauma and Substance Abuse in Veterans:
This presentation will explore the use and value of the Seeking Safety trauma-informed therapeutic model in treating veterans and returning service members.
11/15/12: Justice for Veterans:
This presentation will provide a discussion of the philosophy, structure and operation of Veterans Courts, as compared and contrasted with the more traditional Drug Court model. 11/29/12: Screening and Assessment of Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders: An Overview:
This presentation will review the importance of science based screening and assessment instruments when treating youth with Behavioral Health Disorders. The focus will be on the GAINS, CANS, and the CHAT and the role that they play in identifying/assessing the needs of youth.
12/31/12: Trends in Substance Use: National, State and Local Perspectives:
This presentation will compare findings on prevalence over time using data from SAMHA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health and various archival data systems.
12/27/12: Prevention Resource Centers (PRCs) and Coalition Development:
OASAS funds five regional Prevention Resource Centers (PRCs) to increase capacity for community coalition development and to strengthen the prevention infrastructure at the local level. Coalitions engage multiple systems in addressing and promoting prevention at the local level. Community coalitions, along with local prevention providers, implement environmental strategies to change community norms, reduce availability, and improve enforcement of laws and regulations around substance use and problem gambling. This presentation will provide an overview of these initiatives and an update on progress to date.
